You will no doubt have seen articles in the local press about Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Councils discussion about the idea of devolution with Government This is part of a national initiative which encourages Whitehall departments to devolve to local councils powers, responsibilities and funding in return for a commitment to delivery key policies and programmes.
On 4 September all fifteen local authorities across Hampshire and the Island submitted a ‘Prospectus’ to Government outlining what we could offer by working together and our ask for support in return.
Of particular interest to Parishes will be the idea of ‘double devolution’ – ensuring that services are delivered locally wherever possible. We are just beginning to discuss how best the County and District Councils can pass responsibilities and choices to local communities, and Parishes will have a key part in that discussion as it develops.
