John Avery

John specialises in heritage talks on maritime tragedies including the Titanic, the submarine Thetis and Victorian cemeteries the programme is balanced by lighter subjects such as Quaker Businesses, Huguenots, and The Tichborne Claimant. John Avery is the founder member of Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery and the Southampton Fryatt Plaque.




In 1951 the ship ‘The Flying Enterprise’ began to split in the western approaches to the English Channel. The tug Turmoil took the ship in tow but a US destroyer under secret orders arrived followed by other US government ships. Why?


Admission: £2.50 (covering hire of hall, speaker, & provision of refreshments) 

Everyone is very welcome to our meetings – no joining fee, just pay at the door when you come. There is plenty of car parking at the rear of the church or one can easily access the church on foot from the front entrance.   The History Group looks forward to seeing you.
