W.I. April Report

The meeting this month was the celebration of our 39th Birthday. Our W.I. opened its doors for the first time in 1975 with 53 members, three of whom are still attending on a regular basis. We welcomed ten visitors from other WIs who are in our ‘group’ and also the ladies from ‘Bishops Bells’ who entertained us with their hand bells. They played several pieces and explained that the music they read from is the same as for other instruments and they have to send them to the Whitechapel foundry to have them tuned, just as the large Church bells are. It was then time for the audience to participate and much to our surprise they played a tune first time with a bit of help from the professionals. They were greeted with loud applause.

We all enjoyed a supper prepared by the committee and a birthday cake made by our member Yvonne.

We congratulated ourselves on a very successful jumble sale, and keep in mind that the next one is the 4th October. We have three places to fill for our outing to Eltham Palace in August, followed by lunch and shopping in Greenwich and then topped off by a boat trip (with bar) down the Thames to catch the coach home. We also will be going to the BBC Good Food show in London in November. We have the WI skittle competition and Group Quiz on the agenda, so we have plenty to look forward to.

Our Group Meeting at the Study Centre was very enjoyable listening to the Speaker from Hounds for Heroes.

The next meeting is our AGM when our President steps down and new committee members are welcomed. Should you wish to join us, we meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Waltham Chase Village Hall, except June, when we have an evening walk followed by a meal at a local hostelry
