W.I. Aug Report

The July meeting was off to a good start with a new member signing up and two visitors thinking about it.  Cards were given to those with birthdays before our next meeting in September, one of whom is Candice who invited the whole of our group to her birthday party!

Our speaker for the evening was Mr John Pitman, who is well known to W.I.  His talk was ‘Pantomime and the role of the Dame’, and he informed us of the traditions and all things concerned with the Dame.  He is a very interesting speaker and there was lots of laughter.  He is the Chairman and Organiser of the Otterbourne Pantomime and takes part every year.  We are all thinking about going next January.

We do not have a meeting in the hall in August and some members prefer to go for a walk and then stop off at a local pub for a quick bevvy.  This year, however, we have decided to have an evening meal after the walk at the Black Dog.

September is a busy month, as we are giving a Sunday tea to some of our older members of the community. This takes place on the 2nd September and will be visited by the Mayor of Winchester, who will be joining everyone for the tea.  There will also be some entertainment, so should be a good afternoon.  The cost is covered by the money we had left over from the grant for the Fun Day on the Rec and our members will be busy baking cakes for the event.  Because of the limited capacity of the Village Hall we could not invite all those we would have liked to, so our apologies to those who will not be there.  Maybe we can do another one some other time.

Instead of a Bursary for one person, this year we are having an education trip for everyone. We have suggestions such as ‘Legal London’ which includes a visit to the Law Courts.  ‘Kill or Cure’ A history of medicine in London from Roman times to modern day, with a visit to the Wellcome Collection and also ‘Faith Hope and Charity’ where you spend the day tracing the history of philanthropy and visit the Foundling Museum.  Our members will also be asked for suggestions.  It will be hard to choose which one to do.

Our Jumble Sale is on October 6th at the Village Hall at 1.30pm, Come and grab a bargain!

Our September meeting which takes place on the 11th is a talk about Naomi House by Katie Hamilton.  Please drop by, you will be welcome.
